South Padre Island, a Gulf of Mexico Vacation Close to Home

download (4)When we think about beach vacation spots in the Gulf of Mexico, we often think of destinations in, well, Mexico. We also think of  vacation spots like Belize, where the Gulf meets the Caribbean.  But we would be remiss to ignore the many Gulf Coast beaches in the U.S., from the Southern tip of West Florida in Naples, north to Tampa and Pensacola, west to Gulfport, Mississippi, the Gulf Coast of Louisiana, and onward to the Gulf shores of Texas. These Gulf of Mexico vacation destinations are close to home and offer all the beauty the Gulf Coast has to offer.

South Padre Island, just off the southern coast of Texas,  is a favorite Gulf Coast getaway location, offering plenty of opportunities for rest and relaxation, as well as an exciting nightlife and plenty of family fun.

South Padre Island offers the perfect mix of Texas style and tropical paradise. The low, narrow barrier island (30 miles long and only a half mile wide) offers long stretches of beautiful sandy beach facing the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Outside of  the spring break season that sees a high volume of students, South Padre Island is quiet and laid back compared to many Gulf-side spots in Mexico.

South Padre features the bounty of the Gulf of Mexico, making a vacation here a pleasure for dolphin watching, kite boarding, fishing, sailing, boating, horseback riding. parasailing, scuba diving and much more. The island’s variety of luxury beachfront hotels make South Padre the perfect place to get a taste of the Gulf Coast without venturing too far from home.
