When many people picture taking a vacation to India they think about milling about in hot, crowded marketplaces and maneuvering their way through the country’s world-famous crazy traffic congestion to get from one desert locale to another. But, on the west coast of India, in towns such as Gokarna, which sits on the Arabian Sea, life has a much different pace and the surroundings become as tranquil and tropical as any tropical island. Gokarna is home to several beaches that are known to locals and tourists alike for being great for different reasons.
Om Beach is the best known beach in Gokarna and is pretty famous throughout India as one of the country’s most beautiful beach spots. The beach got its name because it is made up of two crescent shapes that fit together to form the ‘Om’ symbol that is used so much in the Hindu religion. And in addition to loving Om Beach for this very spiritual reason, the Indian people and everyone else who visits the area can’t help but fall in love with its sense of serenity and sheer natural, untouched beauty. For a beach that gets so many visitors, Om has maintained an unspoiled tranquility. It is surrounded by hills covered in thick green trees and the blue water laps over the large rock formations that jut out from the coastline. However, as secluded and calm as Om Beach is, it is also a hub for activities such as parasailing, surfing and banana boat rides.
