Some beaches in the Hawaiian Islands are so far-flung and hidden away that they barely have names that are known to the public, while other Hawaiian beaches are the stuff of legend and their names are synonymous with the tropical splendor that is Hawaii. Waikiki Beach certainly falls into the latter category. Waikiki is one of those beaches that is so famous it has made it into songs and movies. And while it may not be Hawaii’s most serene, untouched beach by a long shot, there are definitely plenty of reasons why Waikiki Beach has earned its celebrity status.
Waikiki Beach is located along the shoreline in Honolulu, on the island of O’ahu. This white sand beach separates the bustling town of Honolulu from the ocean and gives its residents and visitors a built-in playground for fun in the sun. This beach, which had only a few small hotels in the late 1800s has grown to be one of the most popular Hawaiian spots for large resort hotels. The Waikiki Beach Walk is the beach’s newest development, a 7-acre stretch of shops, restaurants, bars and hotels. But all of this growth is overshadowed by the beauty of the beach itself. Perhaps because Waikiki Beach is surrounded by so much development it makes the tropical beauty of the sand and water that much more of a peaceful oasis. Waikiki has definitely earned its reputation as a legendary beach.
